Signs of Driving Anxiety
Driving anxiety can show up in many different ways. You might recognise some of these patterns.
Before the Drive Even Starts
You find yourself:
- thinking about the drive hours beforehand
• rehearsing the whole journey in your head
• checking the route repeatedly on Google Maps
• feeling anxious just thinking about the drive
Sometimes the anxiety begins before you even get in the car.
While You're Driving
You might notice:
• your heart racing behind the wheel
• gripping the steering wheel tightly
• constantly scanning for somewhere to pull over
• feeling trapped on motorways or busy roads
Many people say they feel like they are just trying to get through the drive — and feel completely drained afterwards.
Changes to Your Driving
Over time you start to:
- avoid motorways completely
• only drive around your local area
• limit where and how far you drive
• cancel plans because the drive feels overwhelming
Driving anxiety can slowly make your world smaller and smaller.
Driving can feel normal again.

Many people who struggle with driving anxiety find it confusing because they often know logically that driving is safe, yet their body reacts as if something dangerous is about to happen. Driving anxiety is not just general anxiety — it has its own patterns. Avoiding motorways. Checking constantly where the next exit is or where to pull over. Studying the route repeatedly before you even leave. Feeling panic build the moment a car approaches from behind. Or feeling afraid of a panic attack happening while driving. These experiences are far more common in driving anxiety than most people realise.
My work focuses specifically on helping people resolve driving anxiety by addressing the different factors that contribute to it — before working directly with the fear response behind it. Using a specialised approach that combines advanced conversational hypnosis, psychological techniques, and neuroscience-based methods, the goal is not simply to manage the anxiety, but to resolve it and change how the brain responds to driving situations.
When the issues behind driving anxiety are resolved, driving begins to feel calm and normal again.
Driving anxiety requires a specialised approach.
General anxiety advice doesn’t address the specific fear response linked to driving.

Common Questions About Driving Anxiety

Yes. Driving anxiety is a very common fear response, and it can change when the underlying causes are addressed properly.
Driving anxiety is not simply a lack of confidence. In many cases, it develops when the brain begins to associate certain driving situations – such as motorways, busy traffic, or unfamiliar roads – with danger.
Once that fear response becomes linked to driving, the body can start reacting automatically with symptoms like a racing heart, dizziness, or the urge to escape. Our work focuses on identifying and resolving the factors behind that fear response while helping the brain change how it reacts to driving situations. Although many people experience similar symptoms, the factors behind driving anxiety are different for each person.
This is why our approach is designed specifically for driving anxiety while also being tailored to the individual. When all factors are addressed, driving begins to feel calm and normal again.
Sometimes it begins after a stressful period, a panic attack while driving, or a situation where the body suddenly reacts with fear behind the wheel. Once the brain links that fear response to driving situations, similar situations can begin to trigger anxiety again. This can feel confusing because logically you know you can drive – but your body reacts differently.
The fear of having a panic attack while driving is actually one of the most common parts of driving anxiety. Especially if you had a panic attack while driving before. Part of resolving driving anxiety involves addressing the fear of panic itself, so the body no longer reacts in the same way while driving.
Yes. Many of my clients with driving anxiety have been avoiding certain roads, motorways, or driving altogether for months or even years. Avoidance is a very common part of driving anxiety and does not prevent change from happening. Once we address all factors behind the anxiety, people are able to return to driving gradually and comfortably again.
